John Hurt: Stage 1

I called this post 'Stage 1' as I'd like to develop it at some point to a more involved piece but at present I'm not sure which way to go. Maybe a black and white hatched drawing or a highly rendered colour version—not sure. Going to sit on it for now...

ISCA Korea Competition Entries

Above are my two entries for this year's ISCA competition to be held in Seoul, South Korea. Bit of a fandango trying to get them uploaded - the website wouldn't let me upload initially - but I just managed it yesterday, which was the deadline. So, I'm afraid you're too late if you were thinking of having a crack yourself. Although there was an option to choose from among a hundred faces - some international stars, others South Korean luminaries - I thought I'd go for 'local' faces as it seemed more interesting to me. 'Was fun doing some research into the various subjects to see who would be good to caricature; not only image searching them, but also watching Youtube vids to get a feel for the character. Always intriguing to see how other countries interpret concepts such as reality shows and talk shows for television, and how humour is appreciated and in what style it's delivered. An education.

Landscape

Created in Photoshop - reproduced on stretched canvas

I love all forms of 2d art/illustration and abstract art is no exception. I often manufacture abstract elements into whatever I'm working on even if the final effect's not immediately obvious. Shown above is a landscape (top) that I created recently along with a photo (below) showing a hanging reproduction.

I also like pushing horizon lines way up (or sometimes down) so that an expanded area of sky/earth is shown. I first noticed this approach a long time ago with the landscapes of Gustav Klimt - and it's influenced me ever since. His landscapes are almost totally abstract but are still obvious as to what they are depicting. Check out his 'Farmhouse with Birch Trees' or 'The Park' for examples of extreme horizons...

Here's a fairly quick re-working of an old pencil sketch of Hollywood fav' Mr Jack Lemmon. I wanted to do a b&w painting just to concentrate on form and shade. There wasn't a lot of detail in the reference photo so I had to fill in the blanks. It's very rare I do a side-on portrait and, like anything, it's tricky if you're not used to it - you have to go about things in a slightly different way... good fun.

Brand new colour study of a silver screen actor coming soon...ish.

OK, bad joke, but every line of the above scribble was delivered with a fondness associated with those whose memory make up the fibre of one's past. Can't imagine someone of his English eccentricities being allowed a break in front of the BBC's cameras today. Heard a magnificent poem on the radio this evening  by the great Murray Lachlan Young, eulogising Patrick Moore. Very funny. If I discover a link to it then I'll post it here...

Günther Takes The High Mountain Pass...

Günther's taking the high mountain pass to visit his girlfriend Heidi in the next valley over. Today, as always, he'll be late, due to him stopping to appreciate the fairy lights, a phenomenon of high altitude and bad grog.

A totally organic experiment hence there being no sense to this whatsoever other than the mangled narrative I've suggested above. If he's got ginger hair, how come he's got a 5 o'clock shadow? Oh well...

Sergio Toppi - remembered

A quickish sketch of the great Italian artist and comic illustrator who died yesterday, and is surely deserving of a more involved study at some point. That's three legends gone this year - very sad. I haven't discovered one definitive web site dedicated to him but if you want to see this master's work (and you really do want to see his work) then your best move would be to image search his name on google - do it now!
